New exhibit opening at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum this Friday May 25th.

Today, all names synonymous with the word “outlaw,” but 40 years ago they started a musical revolution by creating music and a culture that shook the status quo on Music Row and cemented their place in country music history and beyond.

The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum’s upcoming major exhibition, Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s, will explore this era of cultural and artistic exchange between Nashville, Tenn., and Austin, Texas, revealing untold stories and never-seen artifacts. The exhibition, which opens May 25 for a nearly three-year run, will explore the complicated, surprising relationship between the two cities.“

I just read a story about Jimmy from Peter Cooper’s book, Johnny’s Cash and Charley’s Pride, where he used to go on the Opry and introduce “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose” by saying, “Here’s my latest hit. It’s from 1965.”

That’s exactly the problem with it. This brings nothing new to the table and suffers for it. I can pull out a dozen albums from the countrypolian era (designed specifically to make the music palatable to city folk by pulling out the “hillbilly” elements) that are technically perfect but also bland, formulaic and forgettable, which is what this is. Grade: Dull Thud

Friends, the Ameripolitan Music Award nomination process ends today (Friday 9/22) and I’m submitting my name in the DJ category. If you can spare a minute, send an email to nominations@ameripolitan.com that says Ameripolitan DJ: Don Sticksel, Both Kinds of Music KCHUNG Radio 1630 AM, Los Angeles.

If you don’t know what Ameripolitan is, it’s kind of like the country underground. Where honky tonk, rockabilly, western swing and outlaw music all intersect. Along with classic country, it’s what I play on my radio show.

Country Music Hall of Famer Don Williams dead at 78.

After starting his career in a folk group call the Pozo-Seco Singers, Williams launched a solo career in 1971. He was HUGE in the late 70s with hits like I Believe in You, Tulsa Time and You’re My Best Friend.
