You know, Country & Western!

This ain't your Dad's country music. It's your Granddad's! None of that new Nashville bullshit either. This is where you'll find what I consider the best in Country (Classic and Alt), Folk, and Americana.

Legendary bluegrass musician Doc Watson passed away this year at age 89.
With dozens of records, seven Grammys, and an encyclopedic knowledge of American traditional music, Watson left behind an unmatched legacy. Now his family is working to produce Doc Watson Family Milestones, an intimate, multimedia portrait of a musical hero.

Master banjo picker Earl Scruggs would have been 89 today. Born 1/6/24.

Here’s Earl & Doc Watson picking together on John Hardy & Cripple Creek.

I’m completely immersed in Bonaparte’s Retreat at the moment. If you can’t tell from this playlist.

Apparently, it started out as an Irish ballad, but got trapped in the Appalachian hills and morphed into a fiddle number with a handful of variations. The early well known version by William Stepp was pretty much ripped off by Aaron Copland when he composed Rodeo (aka the Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner theme). However, in true folk tradition it existed in other forms at the same time. Then around 1950, Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King added some lyrics and turned it into a crossover hit. Since then people have had their way with that version.

Thinking of Doc and wishing him a speedy recovery!

Doc, who’s 89, fell down at his home. When he was taken to the hospital, the doctors found other things and flew him to another hospital where…he had his colon taken out! Sounds like he’s still in critical condition, but responsive which he wasn’t before the surgery.

Keep him in your thoughts and/or prayers.
