You know, Country & Western!
This ain't your Dad's country music. It's your Granddad's! None of that new Nashville bullshit either. This is where you'll find what I consider the best in Country (Classic and Alt), Folk, and Americana.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
to being there. Great on a cloudy summer day.

Wanda Jackson & The Lustre Kings
Wanda at 75…still got it. She started out with Riot in Cellblock #9 and I was my old rockabilly self 15 years ago watching her at First Ave.
She also dedicated “You Know I’m No Good”, which she’s been covering for a few years, to Amy Winehouse.
Trampled By Turtles. Leave it to a bunch of guys from our shared Motherland of Minnesota to play the show in plaid. Haven’t seen them since I left about 3 years ago and was pleasantly surprised to hear the applause and see how huge of a following they have now.
Carolina Chocolate Drops tearin’ it up.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that’s The Civil Wars in the tent watching Justin Townes Earle.
The first show I sat all the way through from start to finish. He played Wanderin’ for his encore (solo) and I almost cried. Song was my anthem for a good year. So good.
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott & Pete Seeger - Two legends sharing the same stage - it really takes your breath away. Pete’s still so full of fight and Jack can tell a story like no one’s business.
Pete Seeger’s banjo: “This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender.”
Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings doing their thing yesterday at Newport Folk.
Heckuva day with more to come when I get back to the hotel. Among the iPhone pics of the day: Ramblin’ Jack & Pete Seeger. Unbelievable.
P.S. 22 Chorus & the Freelance Whales in the Kid’s Tent. So awesome.
Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside (on tumblr!)
I’d never seen Sallie or her band before. The power went out on stage and she went acoustic right in the middle of a song for 3-4 songs. Handled it like a pro and the audience gave her giant props.
Sure follow when I get back.
