You know, Country & Western!
This ain't your Dad's country music. It's your Granddad's! None of that new Nashville bullshit either. This is where you'll find what I consider the best in Country (Classic and Alt), Folk, and Americana.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Jenny Owen Youngs - Hot in Herre
Friend of the blog, JOY, just landed at the top of Paste’s list of “10 Terrific Covers of Rap Songs”. Recognize.
Townes Van Zandt - Dollar Bill Blues
Here’s to being broke on payday.
John Prine - Glory of True Love
Steve Earle - Pancho & Lefty
Townes Van Zandt- Cocaine
Well, coke’s for horses, Lord, it ain’t for men.
They say it kills you, but they don’t say when.
You know how hard it is to find a Townes song on tumblr that isn’t Waitin’ Around To Die, Pancho and Lefty, Brand New Companion or If I Needed You? Hard. If I hadn’t used up my song of the day, I’d post White Freightliner Blues.
Townes Van Zandt - Talking about how “If I Needed You” came about with a performance of said song in the last 3 minutes.
Let’s not forget that New Year’s Day also marks the passing of Townes Van Zandt in 1997 at the age of 52. While he outlived Hank by 23 years, it was the same hard living that killed him.

One of the greatest musical performances I’ve ever seen caught on film. Waiting Around to Die by Townes Van Zandt
I would like to thank my friend Drew for bringing me around to the importance of Townes Van Zandt. Miss ya buddy.
John Prine—Dear Abby
from Sweet Revenge
One of the things we’ve lost with the decline of newspapers is the advice column. Sure there’s Savage Love, which is a reflection of modern times (caustic, snarky and contemptful), but reading Dear Abby and Ann Landers was always a treat to see how those old biddys would handle the trials and tribulations of middle America in the paper age - and their word was bond: no comments, reblogs or sharing. Maybe a week(!) later they’d publish a response from a reader telling Abby she was full of it to which she’d dress them down in no time flat.
Oh and movie listings for the X-rated movie theaters, we lost those too.
Loudon Wainwright III - Suddenly, it’s Christmas
Townes Van Zandt - Brand New Companion
From the awesome record, Live at the Old Quarter.
Leonard Cohen - So Long, Marianne
Cannot. Stop. Listening. Where’s the country Cohen tribute record? Fiddle and a steel guitar subbed for the gypsy violin and dreaded saxophone? It’d be awesome.
Some super cool folks in England put together a great Townes Van Zandt tribute record, just released today. Alela Diane, Phosphorescent, myself, and loads of other good artists on there. Check it out if you can. http://www.myspace.com/thetownesvanzandtproject2
Harry Nilsson - Think About Your Troubles
The Point came up on my dash the other day and I’ve had this song on rotation ever since.
Townes Van Zandt - Waiting Around to Die
Happy Friday!
